Photonic crystal

The realization of photonic crystal is a very active domain of research to get new features and applications in optics and related domains. The photonic crystal platform offers an opportunity to realize on demand photonic micro and nanostructures based on polymer materials and to study their applications in different domains, such as linear and nonlinear optics, and quantum and plasmonic photonics.

The researchers of the LPQM laboratory have developed two original fabrication methods:
  • multiple-exposure of two-beam interference (INTER),
  • low one-photon absorption (LOPA) based direct laser writing.

These methods are very simple and inexpensive, allowing realization of multidimensional sub-micrometric polymeric structures.

(a) 2D polymeric structure fabricated by multiple-exposure two-beam interference technique (INTER). (b) Application of photonic structures for efficient second-harmonic generation by quasi-phase matching method.

(a) 3D chiral structure fabricated by LOPA-based direct laser writing technique. (b) Coupling of a single gold nanoparticle to a 2D photonic structure by use of LOPA method.

These structures are very promising for numerous applications in different domains, such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, as well as plamonics.

Recent Research:

Nanotechnology for polymer-based photonic nanostructures (2N2P)

We have demonstrated a new 3D fabrication method to achieve the same results as those obtained by the two-photon excitation technique, by using a simple one-photon elaboration method in a very low absorption regime (low one-photon absorption, LOPA). Desirable 2D and 3D sub-micrometric structures, such as spiral, chiral, and woodpile architectures, with a feature size as small as 150 nm have been fabricated, by using just a few milliwatts of a continuous-wave laser at 532 nm and a commercial SU8 photoresist. This LOPA technique shows great advantages, such as simplicity and low cost.
