Interview of Pr. Yoichi NAKATANI, Director of JSPS Strasbourg Office

On 12th and 13th December 2011, d'Alembert Institute and JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)  co-organized, with the support of CNRS, ENS Cachan and ECP, a French-Japanese Workshop at ENS Cachan on the topic « The Nanotech Revolution, from Science to Society ».
A delegation formed by 24 Japanese professors and researchers came specially for occasion, as about ten French invited researchers, surrounded by young scientists and students presenting posters.

What are the JSPS main actions in connection with France ?

JSPS Strasbourg office, only JSPS representative in France, has 5 main activities :
(1) visiting Universities and Grandes Ecoles to present JSPS scholarship programs,
(2) organizing with the French partners French-Japanese Workshops,
(3) organizing with French-Japanese Academic House the conferences in Strasbourg,
(4) selecting with CNRS the French young researchers going to Japan, and
(5) supporting « JSPS French Alumni Association »

Why did you choose to organize this workshop with d'Alembert Institute at ENS Cachan this year ?

D'Alembert Institute (IDA) is renowned worldwide in nanosciences studies. With Prof. Jean-Yves Mérindol, ENS Cachan President, we agreed to co-organize a workshop « Nanotech and Society », when I visited ENS Cachan in April 2010. President Mérindol entrusted Prof. Joseph Zyss, IDA Director, to coordinate the French side in partnership with Prof. Seizo Miyata, Tokyo Institute of Technology, for the Japanese side.

Which skill domains from ENS Cachan have in particular considered your Japanese invited professors' attention ? Could some collaborations between laboratories of ENS Cachan and those represented by JSPS grow soon ?

Prof. Zyss' innovative works in nanosciences are highly esteemed by the Japanese guests. ENS Cachan Young researchers' posters (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering) were also much appreciated. JSPS would like to encourage ENS Cachan researchers to answer to the calls for applications of bilateral programs (CNRS-JSPS), « Sakura » program (MAEE-JSPS) or « Chorus » program (ANR-JSPS) in order to stimulate the development of French-Japanese collaborations. JSPS offers post-doctoral or invitation scholarships to PhD and researchers (https://dri-dae.cnrs-dir.fr/spip.php?article1242).
