Interview of Pr. Ron NAAMAN, Co-Director of LEA NaBi, Head of the Chemical Physics Dept, Weizmann Institute (Israël)

Can you identify strength and weaknesses, the former ones to be reinforced in the next phase (renewal for 2012) and the latter to be amended?

Strengths:
i) The interdisciplinary activity and the ability to have good communication among scientists from different fields (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and from the two countries.
ii) The exposure of young scientists and students to various scientific activities in several related but not overlapping fields and in different laboratories.
iii) The ability to join forces so that interdisciplinary questions can be answered by drawing resources from different laboratories in the two countries.

Improvements required:
i) Enhancing the number of collaborative efforts and especially the number of students and postdoc that are exchanged among the laboratories that participate in the program.
ii) Increasing in the number of young scientists and students that are exposed to the Nabi activity.
iii) Initiation of join projects among the participating laboratories within the framework of more general EU projects.

What should be, from your point of view, the main goals or targets for the next phase of NaBi?

The goals for the next phase should include i) Increasing the number of students and postdocs that are involved in the collaborative projects and encourage them to visit the collaborative lab and work there for some period of time. ii) Exchanging postdocs, so that former students from the CNRS labs will come to the Weizmann for postdoc and vice versa. iii) Expose NaBi to the international community by increasing the number of published join papers and inviting scientists from Europe and the US to participate in NaBi meetings. iv) Start to build the infrastructure for a physical CNRS laboratory at the Weizmann Institute. This laboratory will allow scientists from the Weizmann to participate in CNRS programs and scientists from the CNRS to stay at the Weizmann and work with the Israeli collaborators.
