Interview of Pascal LARZABAL, Professor of Electrical Engineering at University Paris Sud 11, Director of SATIE (UMR CNRS 8029, ENS Cachan)

The SATIE laboratory is a research unit supported by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research: CNRS). The evaluation of the activities of the SATIE regarding the past five years and that of its research project for the next five ones will be examined in 2015. In this context the SATIE is changing its organization. Could you explain us the goals of this re-organization as well as the major research fields the SATIE is going to focus on?

This re-organization appeared to us as necessary for carrying out our research program and for applying our strategy with our integration to the Paris Saclay University in view.  Among the advantages of this new organization is the better highlighting of our recent research advances in fields such as instrumentation and imagery systems or biomicrosystems, which were a bit in the shadow of our historical activities dealing with energy systems. The major research fields the SATIE is going to focus on are: the energy management, the clean transport, the ecosizing, the imaging and instrumentation systems, the protection of the environment and of the material heritage, and the life engineering.

Till 2012, the scientific projects supported by the IDA have concerned only few researchers of the SATIE. Which evolutions of the IDA would you propose which will increase the SATIE involvement in the IDA?

For many researchers of the SATIE, the IDA has long appeared, up to a point, as a closed organization, the scientific prospects of which were far from theirs. However, an interdisciplinary organization such as the IDA must carefully watch over being widely open in order to prevent the risks of standardization of its scientific thought, which can lead to isolating it from the neighboring communities, such as the SATIE. To avoid such a risk, we need scientific regeneration channels drawing in the founding laboratories ecosystems. Only such a structural opening will ensure the scientific porosity expected in a long-term strategy for a real interdisciplinary innovation and the involvement of everyone. So for, it is necessary to clearly state i) the society challenge the IDA purpose represents, so that every of our scientists can get hold of it; and ii) the scientific opening upon which the latter is assumed to be built. I would say: let us trust in researchers, let them dream and let open the door to them. In this way one can make sure that they will come in..

What role could the IDA play in the Electrical and Optical Engineering department (EOE) of the Paris Saclay University?

Quite often, the research and education organizations which consider themselves as being interdisciplinary actually consist in the sum of disciplinary organizations. The IDA goes further because in addition to the disciplinary excellence of its researchers it has already carried out a scientific sedimentation enhancing the work at interfaces of different disciplines. The experience of the IDA on what could be named a method of scientific fertilization will be particularly welcome in the EOE department where it could play a useful structuring role. It could also strengthen the EOE department in its international influence regarding engineering of transdisciplinary systems.
